5 Powerful Ways To Create A Thick Skin & Bust Through Failure

bust through failure

Failure, defeat, rejection… it’s all part of the game. It’s not a matter IF you will fail, it’s a matter of when.

And more importantly… how many times are you willing to do it, without letting it crush your spirit and quickly get back up swinging?

It can come in the form of client rejection, refunds, projects falling through, ads not working, sales letters not converting, dealing with dishonest partners and vendors… you name it.

The journey of the entrepreneur is full of these surprises.

And the average person is simply not equipped to deal with it. Much easier to throw in the towel and go back doing whatever you were doing before.

After all, it ain’t fun falling flat on your face over and over again.

“Realize there is one major difference between average people and achievers. The difference is how they respond to failure”
– John Maxwell

John Maxwell is right, it’s not what happens to you, it really is how you respond to it, that determines the situation.

Here Are 5 Powerful Ways To Bust Through Failure & Defeat

1. Reframe Failure

Reframe is an NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) technique. Which basically means, change how you look at failure.

plan a-b-cKind of like Thomas Edison said – “I didn’t fail 10,000 times, I found 9,999 ways it didn’t work.”

With each try, you can cross of on more path to your goal, and you’re one step closer to finding the one that’ll get you there.

Anyone can look at failure as defeat. And most people do. But a champion has the uncanny ability to recognize failure for what it is – a learning experience. And treats it like one.

In the area of internet marketing and traffic generation, it’s a fact that more often than not, you will lose money when testing your ads and traffic initially.

KEY word here is testing. In this case, you’re buying data to see what traffic sources, images, and ad appeals work and which do not. So if you spend a $100 and get NO results, while most would see it as failure, smart marketers understand that they’re buying data. They’re learning what to do and what not to do.

Same applies to virtually every aspect of running a business. Including putting together offers and ads.

Some of the biggest marketing companies online, with a staff of very smart marketers, have a 80 to 90% failure ratio when testing new ads. In other words, 8 or 9 out of 10 ads they create either lose money, or break even.

But when they find one which is a blockbuster winner, it makes up for all the other ones that didn’t work, and then some.

When you look at it this way, your setbacks become your stepping stones. And your past mistakes become powerful lessons and learning experiences.

“You can use your past as a book or as a hammer” – Jim Rohn

Now this kind of thinking takes a certain level of mental toughness. But it’s crucial to your success as an entrepreneur.

2. Don’t Take It Personally

This is a biggie!

And most of us DO take it personally. When someone says “NO”, slams the door in your face, hangs up on you, cancels, refunds, etc… you take it personally. It’s easy to lose confidence when time and time again “it” doesn’t happen. And start believing that it’s you.

But if you start looking at what happens as part of the process, not letting failure, setbacks and disappointments define YOU… you stop taking it personally.

Understand that YOU didn’t fail. The project, the idea, the action you took didn’t work. That’s all.

3. Don’t Dwell On It

It’s normal to feel down and somewhat defeated. But the quicker you can bounce back emotionally, the faster you can move on.

Look, it’s no fun when you invest some money in a marketing test, and it flops. Especially when you had some high expectations because you put your heart and soul into it, spending weeks and maybe even months preparing.

So it’s ok to have a short pity party. And I know all to well that at times, you just want to crawl into a corner and sit there licking your wounds. Trust me, I get it.

But I also know that there’s absolutely no benefit to staying depressed for too long. Feel what you need to feel and move on.

4. Ask The Million Dollar Question

I think when it comes to failure, there’s a Million Dollar question you can ask yourself that will quickly shift you from feeling defeated to feeling empowered.

What did I learn from this experience?

I once heard Brian Tracy say that you need to look at everything that happens (good and bad) as a “gift” from the Universe. An opportunity to learn.

“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” – Napoleon Hill

You just need to look for it.

5. Move On To The Next Idea Quickly

The best thing you can do is to MOVE fast. Movement creates a shift of energy. And the more rapidly you can move on your next idea, the better and more confident you’ll feel as a result. And the quicker you’ll get the results you want.

When I was in direct sales, selling financial services, rejection was a daily part of my life. Like, multiple times a day.

Any time I’d get an appointment cancellation, a client who changed their mind, or any one of the dozen things that happened every day, I would immediately jump on the phone and do something productive. I would take action.

By getting into the habit of taking proactive action right away, you’ll very quickly build that mental toughness muscle to help you become more resilient and fail forward.
