Do you want to change your life and make a lot of money for the work you do?

I’m talking about creating a massive shift that will help you achieve big goals and dreams, and allow you to live the life you truly want.

I’m going to show you how.

Brian Tracy tells a story in his book “Focal Point” about a plant that was having a problem. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong and brought in one of the top consultants to find the problem.

He walked around for two days studying everything and making calculations.

Finally, he climbed up to a point in the plant and put an X with a big black marker on one of the gauges. He said that was where the problem was and they needed to repair and replace the apparatus connected to this meter to solve the problem.

After he left they got a bill for $10,000 for services rendered.

The owner of the plant thought this was a high fee for simply placing an X. He called the consultant and asked for itemized bill to be sent.

A few days later, he received a new invoice.

It said, $1 for placing the X. $9,999 for knowing where to place the X.

Now there are a couple of major points to this story.

One is knowing where to place the X in different areas of your life to accomplish what you want.

But when I first heard this story, I was a young buck, in my early 20’s, sitting in the audience listening to this story LIVE, here’s what I got out of it…

“How can I become the person who will get paid for knowing where to place the X?”

Hard work alone ain’t gonna cut it. We all know people who work really hard, but make very little money.

To make a lot of money and charge the marketplace top dollar for the service(s) you render, you need to bring massive value to the market.

So the question becomes…

What skill or skills can I acquire that will make me more valuable to the marketplace?

This one question has been guiding me for years.

And the good news is, anyone can master highly valuable skills.

How To Master Valuable Skills Others Will Pay You For

Step 1. Identify Highly Valuable Skills

how to master any skillFirst step is to identify what skill or skills do you need to acquire to become more valuable. Skills that others would pay a lot of money for.

For example, in the area of internet marketing

High-end marketing consultants charge a lot of money for helping create sales campaigns.

Copywriters who create ads, sales letters, and video sales letters that sell products charge big fees for their service.

If you know who how to generate a lot of traffic for a website, you can get paid handsomely.

Product creators know how to make money by providing solutions to problems people have in the marketplace.

These are just some of the examples in my area of expertise, but the list can go on.

Pick any industry, and you can find a number of places where others will gladly pay you a small fortune for knowing where and how to place the X.

Step 2. Seek Out Mentors

mentorI can’t emphasize enough the importance of this.

Who are the people that have the skills you want and are getting the results you’re after?

Chances are, there are plenty of people who have already done something similar to what you want to do.

Identify who they are and study them.

Ideally it would be great to seek one of them out and work 1-on-1. But it’s not always possible, and in many cases it can be very expensive. But you know what? There are courses, training programs, podcasts and books by them.

Investing in learning a valuable skill can be the best investment you can make in your life, with the highest ROI (return on investment.)

When I started selling financial services, I was almost 19 years old. I knew absolutely NOTHING about this industry, how the products worked and how to present them. That’s a little bit of a challenge, don’t you think?

On top of that, would you trust a 19 year old kid with your finances?

Plus, I knew nothing about sales or marketing, and as the saying goes, I couldn’t even ‘close’ a door.

So how do you overcome these challenges?

You become a pro.

I decided that I will make myself so knowledgeable and so good, that clients will have no other option but to do business with me.

So what did I do?

I went to the bookstore and got myself some personal finance books and books on mutual funds. I found some great training literature on how insurance works, and dove right into it.

By the time I was in my early 20’s, I had people twice and even three times my age giving me money to invest for them.

That was no accident.

When I got into internet marketing, I studied everything I could get my hands on about marketing, advertising, traffic generation, and so on.

The result is that I’ve been able to make a pretty good living working from home, doing a number of things on the internet both for myself and as a “hired gun” for others.

But I first had to find some mentors who I could study and emulate.

Step 3. Wax On – Wax Off

how to master any skillThe first two steps are pretty easy to do.

Identifying the skills and finding where to learn them is not rocket science, and requires little effort. Now it’s time to do the work.

Or as Mr. Myiagi in ‘Karate Kid’ says – “Wax on, wax off”.

If you want to master something, you need to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

One of my mentors, world’s top sales trainer Tom Hopkins has a 5 step learning process for mastering anything.

1. Impact

Consciously hearing, writing, reading and saying it.

When I pick up a good book on marketing for example, I also like to get it on audio, so that I can both read it and hear it.

I also read with a highlighter, and later go back and type out the important points of the book, so that I can go back and review my biggest takeaways.

2. Repetition

You must hear, write, read and say what you want to master a minimum of 6 times to get a 60% retention.

This works great with sales and advertising techniques.

2 quick examples.

When I was selling financial services, and started learning how to actually sell, I would write down the questions I wanted to ask my prospects on 3×5 cards, and would make myself go over them again and again.

I also wrote out the entire presentation and kept going over it, so that I could deliver it flawlessly.

When I made the decision to get really good at writing sales copy, I discovered that the very top and the highest paid copywriters recommend studying classic ads and sales letters, and write them out by hand. Something I’ve done many, many times. And still do to this day quite frequently.

3. Utilization

Consciously making yourself use the information.

At first, it will be a conscious effort to actually put what you’ve learned to use. Everything you do will happen in 3 stages.

– Crawl
– Walk
– Run

In that order. You need to crawl before you can walk, And you need to walk before you can run. Most people want to run a marathon without learning how to crawl.

4. Internalization

This will happen automatically. With enough repetition, it will become a natural part of you.

5. Reinforcement

Going back to basics once every year. Go back through your books or learning materials to keep the axe sharp and stay on top of your game.

There’s a reason why the military requires an annual training for the reserves.

Finally, the only question that you may have is where to find the time to do this, because we’re all busy, right?

What I found is that one hour a day is all you really need.

Just imagine if you dedicate one hour a day for the next year to mastering a highly valuable skill. Where will you be 12 months from now?

In just one year, you’ll have 365 hours of skill development under your belt. And will probably be in the top 5% of your field.

Do it for the next 2 to 3 years, which something almost nobody is willing to do… and you will be one the very best in the world.

And that is how to make a lot of money.
